Honeycomb Gel Seat Cushion

Here is the mechanism, without the hype. When you sit on a flat seat, most of your body weight lands on two small points - your sit bones and your tailbone. Pressure concentrated on a small area is what starts to ache. The honeycomb structure changes that: the cells directly under those points fold and let you settle in, while the cells around them stay standing and take up the load. Same body weight, spread over a wider area.

It is firmer than a pillow and softer than the chair. The gel has real give - press it with your thumb and the cells fold - but it does not swallow you the way a soft foam pad does. Most people would describe it as supportive rather than plush. If you want something you sink into, this is not that. It is designed to hold you up evenly rather than feel soft for the first ten minutes.

It measures 38cm wide x 33cm deep x 3.5cm thick. That suits a standard office chair, most car seats, economy plane seats, dining chairs and most camp and stadium chairs. Because it is only 3.5cm thick it does not noticeably change your seating height or your position relative to the wheel or the desk.

If your chair has a deep bucket seat or raised side bolsters, measure the flat section first - you want at least 33cm of usable depth.

The cover has a non-slip textured base that grips upholstery, fabric and leather. On most seats it stays put through normal shifting and standing up. On very slick leather or vinyl you may find it moves a little over a long drive - pushing it back into the seat takes a second.

Two parts, two methods. The cover unzips completely and goes in the machine on a cold, gentle cycle - hang it to dry rather than tumble drying. The gel cushion itself can be rinsed under a tap with a little mild detergent and left to air dry, which is not something you can do with a foam cushion. Nothing about it needs dry cleaning or special products.

This is the main practical reason to choose honeycomb over foam. A solid foam pad gives body heat nowhere to go, so it builds up underneath you. The honeycomb is an open grid with air channels running right through it, so air can move rather than being trapped. It is not refrigerated and it will not feel cold to sit on - it simply does not seal heat in the way a solid pad does.

Foam and gel behave differently under load. Compressing foam works its cell walls until they break down, which is why an old foam cushion often keeps a body-shaped dent. TPE gel is elastic - it flexes and springs back rather than crushing - so it returns to shape when you stand up. As with any gel or rubber product, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from heaters.
